Abstract

Microplastic pollution has emerged as a global environmental concern, significantly affecting aquatic ecosystems. These tiny plastic particles, originating from industrial waste, personal care products, and degraded larger plastics, pose severe ecological and toxicological risks. This paper examines the sources, pathways, and impacts of microplastics in freshwater and marine environments. The ingestion of microplastics by aquatic organisms disrupts feeding behavior, reproduction, and overall health, leading to bioaccumulation and biomagnification across the food chain. Additionally, microplastics act as vectors for toxic pollutants, exacerbating their harmful effects. This study highlights the urgent need for enhanced regulatory frameworks, inJanative mitigation strategies, and public awareness to combat microplastic pollution effectively.
